What makes touch controls actually good

Touch controls are the quiet reason I drop a lot of mobile games. The design looks great in screenshots, then you play and your thumb is permanently in the way of the thing you need to see.

Good games solve this with generous hit areas and buttons placed near the screen edges where your hands already rest. Anything requiring pixel-perfect taps in the middle of chaos is asking for frustration.

Gestures help when they're intuitive. A swipe to reposition or a long press to inspect feels natural; forcing a two-finger combo during a fast wave does not. The best controls fade into the background.

When I review a strategy game, I always test it one-handed on a train, because that's how real people play. If it falls apart there, no amount of depth saves it.
